Description

The idea of my project is trying to use different sensors to make effects for my character and interact with the emotions of my character. I chose a pig as my character because it has the quite simple habits, such as eating and sleeping. I then created my story to be separated by daytime and night time. I used a photocell sensor for changing the time from daytime to night time, and an infrared proximity sensor has been used to interact with the pig.

As my basic idea, my character would be staring at the food – sushi, during the daytime, and it won’t pay attention to anything else when it has started looking at the food, even when someone is trying to get close to it. In comparison, it falls asleep easily when the time turns into night time, thus the pig can be annoyed when someone is getting close, and also it gets angry if it has been annoyed for too long.

To interact with the character, the changing of daytime and night time is dependent on the amount of light that is exposed to with the photocell sensor, and then the daytime or night time movie clips can be played when the data of light has been read. After that, I used an infrared sensor for the data of distance, which responds to a person’s movement, when they are moving or getting closer.

The design of this project really simple, it is a square space of a cardboard box. I took a small part of the top of the box off, which is for providing the data from the photocell sensor, and there is a small window for the infrared sensor as well. For the background of the flash file, I made a simple interior space, thus it’s easy to tell that is in a room.

Sensors and Installation

I have been testing with lots of different sensors, such as Infrared Emitters and Detectors, Infrared Proximity Sensor, Mini Photocell, Optical Detector, PIR Motion Sensor, and Vibration Sensor. However, I chose to use 3 different sensors which are Mini Photocell, Infrared Proximity Sensor, and Vibration Sensor.

The three sensors I have chosen are based on my concept which is, Mini Photocell is to change the time/period, Infrared Proximity Sensor is to grad the data of the range of a person, and Vibration Sensor could be tested to make my character get angry.

For working on those sensors, I made 3 single frames and pins with actionscript coding part, but the problem was I never could make the third sensor (Vibration Sensor) working. I then focused  on the other two sensors.

The Design of Character

Here are the basic sketches that I had before, I then created the animation for the changing faces. The four basic faces are upset, happy, sleepy, and angry. I chose sleepy face and angry face to be the focus in my project.

To work with those faces, I was focusing on their eyes, because I think that’s the most interested part for showing a emotion.

After doing the animations, I moved on to the work of sensors.

The changes of Character and Concept

My first idea was trying to do a scorpion for my character, and the concept was about attacking when a person getting too close.

I then changed my character to a spider or something that runs away when it sees a person coming close.

After those two ideas, I finally decided to creat something cute, and my concept is going to do a lazy pig with lots of emotions that  show on the pig’s face.

Test of Arduino

My first test of Arduino was based on the Blinking LED example, the result of the code was to make the LED turning on every single second when it’s connected to digital pin 13.

The first ideas about the first project jumped into my mind were something like dinosaur or voice controlling machine, but after doing some researches of the sensors of Arduino, I then changed my mind to create a character of a creature which can be a dangerous attacker. I started sketching and for result I think scorpion is a good example for my concept.

I’m going to use a sensor of distance on Arduino, so the idea of this project is that scorpion is attacking when the audience getting close to it.
